Adult Education: Meaning of the Cross

Recurring event see all

April 3 @ 9:30 am 10:30 am America/Bonnie_Lake

Professor Marit Trelstad will be the guest speaker at Creator on April 3 and 10, the two Sundays ahead of Holy Week and Easter.  Her topic will be most timely as it focuses on the “Meaning of the Cross”. She is the author of Lutherrenaisance Past and Present and Cross Examinations – Reading on the Meaning of the Cross Today.  Dr. Trelstad currently serves as chair of Lutheran Studies and professor of Constructive and Lutheran Theology at Pacific Lutheran University.

Concerns over theological ideas of the cross have sparked a landslide of recent theologies about the cross. These theologies offer tough questions to some traditional understandings of the cross. Is redemptive self-sacrifice and death an unintentional message of the cross, potentially supporting violence and abuse? Or does this theological interpretation implicitly sanction the violence of the powerful while glorifying the suffering of the vulnerable? What is the meaning of the cross within the context of racial, economic and gender violence? How do we understand the meaning of salvation and Christ’s role in accomplishing this then and today? We will engage these questions and your own through exploring this stimulating and flourishing area of theology today.
