Today is the last Sunday in the Liturgical year. We call it Christ the King Sunday. Next Sunday begins for us a new liturgical year with the first Sunday of Advent. The church calendar is not in step with our everyday 12-month calendar. The church calendar invites us into a different kind of time. In the church, time is not measured by how old we are, what grade we’re in, or how many items we cross off of our to do list. In the church, time is not even linear. It is cyclical, winding through moods and stories, addressing the deepest longings of our hearts and reminding us of who we are and what we are called to be.
Today, on this last Sunday of the Liturgical year, and the Eve of the next, we will pause and reflect instead on spiritual time, church time, and see what life might offer this way. Whether you are deeply familiar with the practices of church time, or totally new to these habits, I hope this morning offers an opportunity to take a deep breath, and listen once again for the rhythms of life to which our faith calls us.
